Jasper finds the sugar on the breakfast trolley. Jasper's mum was shot in a hunt, and when Julian went to pick up the body he found she was pregnant. Julian did a quick bush Caesarean, but thought that the fawn was dead and so threw it in the bakkie for scrap meat for the dogs. On the way back Gunston, the hunting dog, licked the fawn to taste the blood. That is exactly what a mother doe does to make the baby breathe, and when they got back to the farm Jasper was alive and thought Gunston was Mum. For 3 nights Jasper slept with the hunting dog in his basket, and Jean had to get up every hour to feed him by bottle. That was six years ago, and Jasper is now a fully-grown, frisky "tame" springbok who lives in the garden (when he is being good).
